Jupiter disappears behind our Moon

More to see in the skies over Salina on the afternoon of 8-Sept!    -   Jupiter will disappear behind our Moon at 1:54 PM and reappear at 2:47 PM. Times are for Salina KS.  Look for the waxing crescent Moon before this occultation. Try looking to the SW about 55 deg above the horizon. Best to look with binoculars or a low power telescope, but be sure NOT to look at the Sun. Looking at the Sun is extremely dangerous through any optical instrument!!!!! The diagram below shows a typical occultation where a planet disappears behind our waning crescent Moon and then reappears sometime later.  Contact 1 (C1) occurs when the planet's disk just touch the Moon's limb.  Contact 2 (C2) occurs when the planet's disk is fully occulted by the Moon.  Contact 3 (C3) occurs when the planet is just beginning to reappear.
