Solar Eclipse News from Salina Astronomy Club (SAC)

The Total Solar Eclipse on Monday, 8-Apr-2024 will cross the USA soon !!!  Dedicated eclipse-chaser will travel to get into the 100 mile wide path of Eclipse Totality to get a wonderful view of this eclipse.  See a animation of this event at NASA link -

If your plans do not include traveling to the path of eclipse totality, then you can still observe a partial solar eclipse in many locations.  For example, in Salina, KS the partial eclipse will begin at 12:33 PM.  At 1:49 PM the Moon will cover 86% of the diameter of the Sun's disk.  The partial eclipse will end at 3:06 PM.

An animation of the partial eclipse in Salina can be viewed at following link

The following map show the eclipse paths for 2021-2040 across the globe

Whether in or outside the path of eclipse totality all observers MUST wear their eclipse glasses to safely observe this remarkable celestial event.  Observers can remove eclipse glasses only during the short period of totality.

If one is inside the path of totality on the day of the Total Solar Eclipse (TSE), 8-Apr-2024; one can observe in the eclipse path an eclipse that totally block the Sun’s disk and reveals the amazing solar corona,a streaming luminous feature around the Sun's disk for up to 4.3 minutes.   One can observe through eclipse glasses over 90 minutes the progression of the partial eclipse as the Moon increasingly covers the Sun’s disk. If you are in the the path of totality, then feel free to remove your eclipse glasses to observe totality  After 4 minutes in this totality phase will END and you must fit your eclipse glasses back over your eyes to protect your vision !!! The Moon will continue its progression across the Sun's disk with a diminishing coverage of the Sun.

See a gallery of images from the 2017 TSE at Fred Espenak website -  https://www.mreclipse.com/SEphoto/TSE2017/TSE2017galleryA.html.

I especially liked Fred’s image that is his best reproduction of what he saw through his 8x42 binoculars - https://www.mreclipse.com/SEphoto/TSE2017/TSE2017-T1cmp103-1B.html

Note, one is completely safe to observe the totality phase without eclipse glasses.  In fact, one can only see the amazing corona, that is a million times dimmer than the Sun’s disk, by removing your eclipse glasses. When totality ends after a few minutes, you MUST fit the eclipse glasses back on to observe the partially eclipsed Sun!

If you are outside the path of eclipse totality, then you will always keep your eclipse glasses on during the eclipse. Salina Astronomy Club members are planning to travel to the path of this total eclipse.  Learn more by coming to one of our events.
